About this tour

During World War I a successful recruitment campaign meant many volunteers flocked to join the ranks and accept the King’s shilling. By 1917, given the horrors of the war, insufficient numbers were volunteering for battle and so conscription was introduced. This special tour commemorates those who joined up with such enthusiasm and innocence and who were still alive to witness the Armistice in November 1918.

Who is it really all about? Those who took the King's Shilling in 1914

Our Battlefields Experience allows you to walk in the very footsteps of the men - and women - who fought and died there. You will visit the site where the first shots were fired by British and Empire forces in 1914 and the site of the Armistice where the Great War ended on 11 November 1918. We will immerse you in the sights, sounds, and stories of World War I to bring you a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

• Put yourselves in the minds of those who served on the battlefields and lived to see the end of trench warfare in WWI

• Remember those who served on both sides in the sombre cemeteries of the Western Front

• Visit the Palace of Versailles to see the great Hall of Mirrors where the Peace Treaty was signed

• Join our Gala Victory Ball in France on our final evening

• Stay for two nights in a riverboat, MS Seine Princess

• Significant sites all connected with the beginning and the end of what was supposed to be ‘the war to end all wars’

• Hear stories of bravery, tragedy, luck, and suffering in the very places they happened

An experience to commemorate those that paid the ultimate sacrifice during World War I.
