As the experienced Head of a History Department in an Edinburgh Secondary School, Des Brogan first led groups of students to the battlefields of World War I in 1979. He conducted tours for history teachers-in-training from Scotland’s teacher training institutions in the early 1990s. Since 1996 when he established Mercat Tours International, he has taken many thousands of school students and adults to the trench systems and cemeteries of Belgium and France. All have been greatly affected by the quality of the teaching and the emotional pull of the sites.
Des is an established author, historical consultant and first-class communicator. He takes personal responsibility for the training of Mercat Tours International guides in order to ensure the quality of the teaching experience and to maintain the highest standards of delivery.
All Mercat Tours International guides have a comprehensive knowledge of the battlefield sites and a flair for dramatic presentation. All guides are committed to the company’s motto that
History is a damn good story.
What it needs is damn good telling.
And all guides have the mission to ensure that all who embark on a battlefields excursion with Mercat Tours International will indeed 'remember them'.
